Stanmer Park Estate is a Grade II registered historic landscape that forms a part of the South Downs National Park near Brighton. It is a complex site extending to some 458 hectares. It includes a principal House, designed in early 18th century by Nicolas Dubois (Grade I), and associated gardens also by Dubois and with later input from Nathaniel Richmond. The site includes extensive areas of allotments, an estate village, a working model farm, woodlands, arable land, pasture and parkland open to the public. There are also three Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
We were commissioned by Brighton & Hove City Council to prepare an Historic Landscape Survey and Restoration Management Plan. Our work included an examination of the estate archives and detailed analysis of an extremely accurate estate map dating from 1799. In addition we carried out fieldwork across the site in order to identify and record the surviving historic landscape features and ecological values.
The Plan included a range of Conservation Policies and Objectives leading to an extensive set of outline proposals. These formed the basis of an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund
